When it comes to fashion, we all want the same thing: To look great. But every now and then, it's not uncommon to spot someone -- even the most stylish celebs -- who gets it wrong. Check out our style guide to some of the most unforgivable fashion crimes around, and how you can avoid them.
1. Wearing too-small clothes
Oversized outfits make everyone look bigger, but so do clothes that are way too small. Just because you can squeeze into a size 6 doesn't mean you should. Trousers, pants and skirts that are too tight at the waist will highlight bulges and squeeze a 'muffin top' out of even the slimmest woman. When you're shopping for your clothes, make sure the waistband fits comfortably, whether you are standing or sitting.
2. Showing undies and VPLs
Peeking undies are tacky. Period. If you're wearing low-rise jeans or trousers, make sure your panties are too. Try low-rise boy-style briefs or just push the elastic waistband down so they don't show when you're sitting down. Also, check your rear view in the mirror before you step out of the house. If you're wearing something very snug or with soft, slinky fabrics (think satin and silk), it can cling to your curves and carve visible panty lines on your tush. The solution: Invest in thongs and seamless undies that won't leave any VPLs while you're decked out in your favorite cocktail dress.
3. Following trends that doesn't suit you
If tights are in, and you've got nice, shapely gams, go ahead and get a dozen pairs in different colors. But if you don't have the greatest legs, stay away from them. It's the same for any fashion trend -- don't wear it if it doesn't suit your body type. You don't have to abide by every hottest trend that comes out. The biggest style sin you can commit is to wear something that doesn't do justice to your figure. Our advice? Always go for
styles that flatter your body type, even if they're not the trendiest pieces of the season. Remember, you're wearing the clothes; don't let the clothes wear you.
4. Wearing too much blings
By blings, we mean metallics, sparkles, sequins, and all of those shiny ornaments. Whether you're sixteen or sixty, the same rule applies: Never overdose on embellishments. While it's fun to play with different looks and trends, when it comes to style less is always more. The key to getting it right: Pick one dramatic item, and keep it simple everywhere else. For example, if you're sporting a metallic blouse on top, keep your skirt and accessories matte and understated.
